What are the top-tier shmups on Steam currently? Just making sure I'm not missing any.

(TATE support mandatory if vertical shmup)

What I have:
- Ikaruga
- Mushihimesama
- Crimson Clover
- Alltynex trilogy

What I plan to get:
- Deathsmiles
- Raiden IV
- XIIzeal

I'd say the must-owns are Mushihimesama, Deathsmiles, Ikaruga, DARIUSBURST, Crimzon Clover, and Raiden IV. You're pretty set with those.

edit: ugh can't believe i forgot strania

InfiniteNine

Rolling Girl
big bummer too since MBL is the most fun for scoring (imo).

unfortunately I don't own or have access to either deathsmiles vanilla nor mbl boards to do any comparison, though I wouldn't mind grabbing an MBL in the future so I can have more of a reason to tate my cab monitor other than progear ._.

Yeah unfortunate since I bought a 360 because of playing MBL at the arcade.

Strania's another must-have that I haven't seen people mention--it's a 4:3 vert, so no tate option, but the widescreen options are really nice and should be imitated by more games.

hey guys! i love shooters... this is a great thread.
i went and grabbed some retro shooters i lost bc my mom threw them out recently and grabbed a few that i never played.

these are the ones i saved before my mom trashed my stuff:
zMB0CX7h.jpg

and the rest are pick ups from the last 2 months

Have you picked up GDarius? as far as PS1 shooters go, it's a good time and the graphics are amazing.

Zanac X Zanac (particularly Neo) is my favourite Shmup on the system, but it'll run you 120$ at least.

Zanac x Zanac is also on PSN for PSP and PS3 if you are so inclined
However, not vita :(

Come to think of it, I believe there's a taito legends collection with a somewhat improved version of Gdarius (no slowdown). It might be locked to 480i, though. Probably worth the trade, though I find some of the bosses incredibly difficult even with slowdown, so it might be pretty stupid without.

What do you mean? I have it on my Vita. Maybe it's one of those games you can only transfer by downloading to a PS3 then Vita?

Do you? It doesn't show on vita and afaik, none of the games from those imports from gungho or whoever brought them to PSN can be downloaded to a vita. Maybe you got it during that bug when you could download anything? Or it could be a PS3 transfer, I suppose.

i tried playing a darius game for super nintendo back when i was a kid. i brought one but forgot the title but i was shooting fish shaped bad guys? i didn't like it bc the power ups weren't that cool but maybe i was mistaken and it was a darius game.
i'll try and get Gdarius for ps1 it sounds like it's better. i saw that PC one with the extended monitor recently, that looks cool.

oh i loved Zanac for the NES, i can rock that game. using "1" fully powered up. (it cuts through those mini bosses normal bullets bounce off of, also "5" full powered too)

i just checked on ebay for Zanac
those prices man...

Nah, I didn't it's probably xfer able from PS3.

I'd picked up Gradius V on PSN when it came out. I haven't played it in a few years (my PS2 is in storage at the moment). So it's been a while since I've played it, I booted it up last night because my internet went down, and I wasn't ready to go to bed yet...holy crap, I'm out of practice. I could 1CC the game when I was in practice...last night? Stage 3 before I ran out of continues (I don't have my PS2 save on my PS3 so I'm effectively starting over with the unlock stuff). So, 3 lives, and 3 credits.

Irem's classic shooter R-Type is becoming an anime short. Check out the stunning work-in-progress video here...

Well, this is fabulous. If you're old enough to remember Irem's classic 1987 shooter R-Type, you'll probably also recall that it had some of the coolest monster and ship designs of its era. The huge, Giger-esque beasts that greated the player at the end of levels one and two are difficult to shake. And then there was stage three, which was basically one huge boss battle.

Anyway, animator Paul Johnson clearly has a lingering affection for R-Type, since he's making a stunning anime-style tribute to Irem's most famous shooter. You might also recall that Johnson was also behind the magnificent Star Wars anime, which he uploaded last year.

Johnson calls the below a work in progress. If this is the case, we really can't wait to see what the finished film looks like.

Animation is pretty kewl.

Edit: more clips here: http://www.animenewsnetwork.com/int...r-teases-r-type-animated-short-project/.99507

Fantastic IMHO.

Futari??

Edit: Ugh. DON'T DO THAT TO ME!

Whoops. My bad. I'm used to calling it Futari because I've had the disc forever. Keep forgetting its just Mushihimesama on PC. In any event though these are some sick sale prices. Darious has never been this cheap from the sales i've seen so far. Also Judgment Silver Sword is on sale outside the Eschatos wonder pack which is still full price.

Good times ahead :D

they're two different games

Mushihimesama is a great game (and is on both 360 and Steam)

Mushihimesama Futari is godlike (and is on 360 but not Steam)

I wish I could play R-Type like that.

PlatinumGames are the only ones who could make it happen! Their art direction for Transformers Devastation is perfect.

The real work would have to be on the shmup gameplay / mechanics.

Final Atomic Buster delivered to my wallet.
Well, not really, but I'm buying the ones I'm missing!

If you haven't played Crimzon Clover yet there are no more excuses. Scrounge together 99 cents or you and you're bloodline are lost.

For reals, it is good.

^Looking at all of those sweet sales I am so salty that I dont have a decent gaming PC.

Anyway.

Played Dodonpachi Resurrection for a bit today. 1CC'd novice mode in a few tries. Hooray!

Whats the verdict on Dodonpachi Saidaioujou?

My brother stole my ps2, so i haven't been able to play many shmups. I have very fond memories of R-type Final, though. What did everyone else think about it?

amazing and difficult, but the port supposedly has a bit of input lag that's not on the pcb. I love it much more than dodonpachi daifukkatsu but not as much as dodonpachi or dodonpachi daioujou. the hitbox took awhile for me to get used to as it seems bigger than most ddp games, but I think the trailing hypers just threw me off.

I looked up the videos of the DLC, as cool as the fanservice is....it kinda sucks that it's just 3 levels and you can't use the ships in anything else. I'm sure I'm not the first person to share this sentiment.

Thanks for the sale posting shaowebb!

Grabbing Darius for sure.

Wait, what? SEGA DLC?

Yes, the next (last?) set of DLC for Dariusburst CS features content from Space Harrier, Fantasy Zone and Galaxy Force.

Yup yup! It lets you play Darius Burst using both the songs, ship and MECHANICS of the DLC title you buy. For example you can play Darius with the TAITO dlc which is from Raystorm , Night Striker or Metal Black mechanics. It'll even have the same drops coming off enemies.
Vid
The Sega pack of DLC is coming soon. Space Harrier, Galaxy Force 2, and Fantasy Zone.
The fantasy zone ones even drop coins.
I think the Sega Pack is April 17th.

In much the way that in Akai Katana if you played Slash and Origin modes they were two completely different sorts of games even though they used the same stages thats what the DLC does for Darius Burst. It completely changes how you play the game and makes the entire title a new thing to experience. Especially the Ray Storm and Metal Black ones.

I have a question regarding "Crimzon Clover":

I'm a console-only kinda guy BUT a friend is building me a MAME box....he's using some nice-looking ITX computer to keep make it feel as console-y as possible.
I have no idea what specs that machine has but chances are slim it will be able to run CC, right? The recommended hardware specs seem enormous. :(

Shmups have relatively low requirements compared to many genres. Here are the minimum and recommended specs from Steam. Chances are it will run fine, but I haven't kept up with ITX builds. If you know your specs post em and we'll let you know.

MINIMUM:
OS: Windows XP/vista/7/8
Processor: Pentium 4 2.80GHz or better
Memory: 512 MB RAM
Graphics: Direct3D support
DirectX: Version 9.0
Storage: 800 MB available space
Sound Card: DirectSound-compatible sound card

RECOMMENDED:
OS: Windows XP/vista/7/8
Processor: Pentium 4 CPU 3.40GHz(2 CPUs) or better
Memory: 1 GB RAM
Graphics: GeForce7900 GS eq. or better
DirectX: Version 9.0
Storage: 1 GB available space
Sound Card: DirectSound-compatible sound card

Yeah, saw those STEAM specs and figured it would be waaay to high for that humble MAME cube I'm getting. But who knows?

The ITX was a gift from someone so we didn't go ahead and buy one...in that case I'd know the numbers, of course. Well, I'll find out eventually.

I would be shocked if any computer built with currently purchasable parts wouldn't run CC, honestly.

I've only looked at ITX builds briefly, but the important thing to know is these games are CPU dependent. They often use little or no GPU. From memory ITX's can have weaker CPUs but without knowing which one it is hard to tell.

Generally if it will run MAME fine it will run Shmups fine. Not a bulletproof guarantee, but a general guideline.
