Available for pre-order on the Nintendo Switch, region-free:

Strikers 1945, Gunbird, Sol Divide, and Samurai Aces are already available digitally on the Nintendo Switch but now they are getting a physical release. This is pretty exciting to me because physical releases of shmups are uncommon. Compilations are even more uncommon. No word on pricing or if it's coming West, but since the Switch is region-free fans won't really care.

The fact that it is 'Vol. 1' geeks me out because hopefully we can get some of the other PSiKYO shmups that've been ported to the Switch on a physical cartridge too (like Gunbird 2, Dragon's Blaze, and Zero Gunner 2).

Google Translated summary:

"Saikyo Collection Vol.1" is a collection package version of Nintendo Switch ™, which is a collection of four works of classic Japanese shooting game produced by Saikyo Corporation of Japan. "Saikyo Collection Vol.1" is scheduled to include 'Strikeers 1945', 'Solide Divide', 'Samurai Ace', and 'Gunbird' among the representative works that led to the shooting game genre of the 1990s. It provides an environment in which you can freely play your works. Especially, 'Sole Divide', 'Samurai Ace', and 'Gunbird' will be the first Korean localization in the story, according to a member of ArcSystems' Asia branch.

I wonder how many volumes we'll get. Obviously sales numbers will dictate further releases, but there are a ton of Psikyo shooters out there so this could be quite the rabbit hole all things considered. =)

I'm hopeful.

Switch is already getting several other compilations like SNK 40th, Namco PAC, and the Darius compilation. Plus it is getting Psyvariar Delta. Don't quote me on this because it's merely a hunch but I wouldn't be surprised if Ikaruga eventually got a physical release since Nicalis handled the publishing and Nicalis loves physical versions.

The real goldmine would be if the ACA Neo-Geo ports started getting physical releases, too. It'd be amazing to have stuff like Blazing Star and Last Resort on a physical format after all these years.

Switch is turning into quite the shmup machine. I'd love if M2 ShotTriggers put their work on the Switch, too.

Anyone ever notice how these collections only contain games that are emulated by MAME or another open source emulator? They've literally never included games that haven't been emulated by open source communities.

There are a handful of unemulated games that would actually be kind of interesting since they haven't been available for free for 20 years, and somehow, they don't seem to be able to offer those. I wonder why.

Some companies like M2 ShotTriggers and ACA Neo Geo are known for the quality of their work; they do a deep-dive and flesh out the playability of the game instead of a quick ROM port.

Regarding your other question, that depends on the handful on enthusiasts who own the original boards. You'd be shocked to hear how many of these companies have lost the source code or original PCBs for a lot of these old arcade games. Enthusiasts are primarily the ones figuring out how to dump the ROMS and fiddle with MAME compatibility.
