138 Digital-Only Games to be Lost When PS3, PSP, and PS Vita PlayStation Stores Close

PS3 PS Vita and PSP PlayStation Stores Officially Shutting Down

Among the 2000 digital-only games no longer being purchasable once the PlayStation 3, PSP, and PS Vita console stores close; 138 will be lost.

In October 2020, SIE announced the PlayStation Store on browser and mobile would no longer sell PlayStation 3, Portable, or Vita games; after the new browser store launched.

On March 29th, the old browser PlayStation Store was now effectively shut down; while users had got around the late October 2020 cut-off via region-specific URLs, the website began to redirect to the new store on March 27th.

Later on March 29th, Sony Interactive Entertainment (SIE) quietly confirmed the closing dates for the console stores as well. Several PlayStation Vita developers stated learned this at the same time as the general public; with some still working the morning of the announcement.

Now, VideoGamesChronicle (VGC) has compiled the 138 games that will be truly lost once the PlayStation 3 and PlayStation Portable console stores close July 2nd, followed by PlayStation Vita on August 27th. These games are only available digitally, via PlayStation Now, or only had a non-English physical release (such as Japan).

VGC also note that some games are already gone in some territories. “Lumines Supernova, for example, was pulled from the EU store in 2017 but is still available in North America.”

Highlights include the now restructured Sony Japan Studio’s The Last Guy, where players must rescue people in top-down maps of real major cities from hordes of monsters and zombies. Music-based platformer LocoRoco: Midnight Carnival also faces the axe, along with spin-off action-adventure expansion Infamous: Festival of Blood, and several Armored Core games.

However, the majority of these are available on other platforms (with the aforementioned 138 being truly lost outside of emulation or having a physical Japanese release).

VGC’s estimates the total digital games affected include 730 PlayStation 3 games, around 630 Vita games, “a small number” of PSP games, 293 PlayStation Minis, 336 PS2 Classics, and around 260 PS1 Classics on PSP and Vita.

With the impending dissolution of many classic games, what have been some of your fond memories of the PlayStation 3, PSP, and Vita? Let us know in the comments below.
